'Reduce Civil Service Work Force'
By Yemi Akinsuyi

Chairman, Senate Com -mittee on Public Accounts, Senator Mamman Ali, has called for 50 per cent reduction of the total work force of the civil service as a means to enhance efficient and effective security.

Ali, who made this known yesterday at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, during his tour of police establishments, said once they retired, they should be given 100 per cent of their salary.

In his words: "I think one of the ways out of security problems, especially underfunding of the police, is the number of civil servants. I will advise the Federal Government to reduce the total number of the work force by 50 per cent.

"But they should not let them go just like that. They should be given 100 per cent of their salaries and eventually pay all their entitlements after retirement. They should go home and rest. We will advise the Federal Government to reduce the work force, so that the police can be properly funded", he said.

Ali, who led other senators to the College, expressed disapproval on the N100 per day food allowance for police recruits and called on the Federal Government to increase it.

He, however, commended the Federal Government on funding of the police, adding that the 40,000 annual recruitment has drastically reduced the cost of living of recruits.

He said his committee would investigate the police budget and ensure that all money released is judiciously utilised.

Unconfirmed report indicates that the senators decided to visit police formations, especially training colleges, because of allegation of misappropriation of funds by the force top hierarchy.

The report also said recent threat to lives of the top echelon of the force and threat of strike action by the junior cadre prompted the senators to go on a fact finding tour.
