Assembly Demands EIA Report from Shell
Bayelsa
From John Iwori in Yenagoa
Bayelsa State House of Assembly has expressed displeasure over what it termed a grand plan by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to blindfold the state government on the phase two of the Oluasiri/Soku gas pipeline project.
To this end, the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Honourable Jephthah Foingha has asked SPDC to produce the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report on the proposed gas pipeline project, before the commencement of the project.
The Deputy Speaker who led other members of the House to Oluasiri to observe the first open forum organised by SPDC in the area, noted that the company has not been open to the State Government on its oil exploration and exploitation in the State, which according to him had spanned several decades with the host communities wallowing in abject poverty and deprivation from the multinational oil companies.
He therefore asked SPDC to stop operation on the second phase of the proposed gas pipeline project pending when the land survey and EIA reports were made available to the State government. According to him, only the two reports could convince the House of the level of social and environmental impact the proposed gas pipeline project would have on the host communities.
In their remarks, the Chief Whip, Hon. Robert Enogha and House Committee Chairman on Petroleum, Gas, Environment, and Pollution, Hon. Nimibofa Ayawei, described the open forum organized by SPDC at Oluasiri as a ploy to deceive the host communities. They urged the company to be realistic in its relationship with the State Government.
The legislators had warned SPDC against causing youth violence in the Niger Delta, stressing that similar shady deals by oil companies have led to crisis among communities in the state.
Presenting an address at the open forum, the lawmaker representing Nembe Constituency III in the House, Hon. Opusiri Otobo said the forum was a disguise by Shell to exploit the host communities of the eastern gas gathering project.
