Cultists Kill Gold Medalist, Student
Kwara
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
Dare-devil people suspected to be cult members within 24hours in Ilorin, Kwara State, hacked two people, including a gold medallist for the state at the just concluded National Sports Festival, Tunbosun Awojare, to death.
Tunbosun was killed 24hours after the killing of an SS II student of Cherubim and Seraphim College, Kale Basambo, moment after he watched the first half of the Euro 2004 match between Czeh and Denmark.
The gold medallist, apart from representing Kwara State at the Sports Festival had from October 4-18, last year represented Nigeria at the All African Games (COJA, Abuja 2003) where he picked silver for the country in team event in baseball.
Tunbosun would be the second COJA athlete to be killed in strange circumstances. Police at blackspot on Okene/Lokoja highway had in December last killed the captain of the nation's cycling team, Ibrahim for refusing to stop after he was flagged down. The cyclist won gold for the country at COJA.
THISDAY checks revealed that Tunbosun the son of a retired referee popularly called (Banana) was killed by assailants between 2.30 and 3.30 p.m last Monday.
It was gathered that the athlete was heading towards Ita-Amodu and had barely reached the Ita-Amodu/ Ita-Kure bridge when he was halted by the cultist, who apparently had been trailing him.
Determined to escape their raw deal, the athlete reportedly dashed under the bridged but his assailants gave him hot chase where they later caught up with him opening fire which felled him and to ensure that he did not survive the attack, the assailants stabbed him on the head and other parts of his body.
The assailants, it was learnt, later emerged from under the bridge, sang songs of an accomplished mission on Ita-Amodu/Taiwo road.
It could not be ascertained if the gold medallist was a cult member.
