Why Baros Is So Deadly Czech Republic striker Milan Baros's position as Euro 2004 top scorer has not surprised his coach Karel Brueckner despite a lack of goals for Liverpool. The 22-year-old managed just a single goal for his English club in 13 premier league games last season but his two strikes in the Czechs' 3-0 quarter-final win over Denmark on Sunday made him the leading scorer in the tournament with five goals. Baros, who will be looking to add to his tally in Thursday's semi-final against Greece, has found the target 21 times in 29 matches for his country, including 11 in his last 10 outings. "I really don't see any secret to this," Brueckner told a news conference on Wednesday, "He has a good instinct for goals and it really is quite natural that he is top scorer in this championship." If Baros gets a goal against the Greeks he will equal French playmaker Michel Platini's record of scoring in five consecutive European Championship finals matches set in 1984. In the opening Group D game against Latvia, Baros equalised in the 73rd minute before the Czechs won 2-1 and in a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over the Netherlands he again levelled before his Liverpool team mate Vladimir Smicer grabbed the winner. With qualification already in the bag, he started on the bench for the final group game against Germany but was brought on after an hour and promptly got the winner in the 77th minute. His two goals inside two second half minutes against the Danes ensured the Czechs reached the last four.
