FUTO expels 32 cult members

BEN DURU

Correspondent, Owerri

Thirty-two students of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO ), Owerri, were expelled in the last academic session for belonging to cult groups, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jude Njoku, has said.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, he vowed that the exercise would not stop until all cult members are flushed out of the institution.

He said several students who gained admission with fake results and those involved in examination malpractices have also been rusticated, adding that all the actions taken by the university authorities are designed to ensure peace on campus.

The VC said staff discipline has been intensified since his assumption to office, especially those who sell handout to students or engage in activities unbecoming of them.

“We stand a bit shoulder higher than our neighbours in terms of discipline and crime is very minimal on the campus because the students are aware of the stringent measures on ground to check mate them,” he added.

He said granting autonomy to universities would further give room for discipline, emphasizing that he has ensured that the academic calendar of FUTO is such that a parents can determine what year their wards will graduate.

According to Njoku, “I do not know how you can fight cultism when you have 20 students in a room in a modern university.  Something needs to be done to save the system from clustering of students.”

He vowed to keep FUTO as the leader of all universities of technology in the country, adding “We will try and sustain our gains.  It is difficult to remain on top hence we are doing all that we can do remain there.

Njoku also enjoined Imo people to regard FUTO as their own share of Federal Government presence and should show goodwill to enable the institution reach the height set for it.
