Ibori Games: Delta leads in track and field

Smarting from its
triumph at the National Sports Festival held in Abuja last month, Delta State
has continued in its resolve to dominate Nigerians sports by picking the highly
prized 100metres gold in both the male and female categories in the ongoing Nkoyo Ibori National Games.
Peter Emele dusted
eight other competitors to win the Gold medal in the 100metres for men while
Seyi Omojuwa also emerged top in the female category.
To emerge
victorious, Emele clocked a time of 10.47 while Omojuwa returned a time of
11.61.
Speaking shortly
after the event, Emele adduced his victory to hard work and the encouragement of coaches attached to the
team.
He said the state
has done a lot and was prepared for the Lady Ibori event, noting that the only
way they can pay her back was to perform well.
"We were
camped in Ibadan with all the necessary encouragement. We were well taken care
of as well, so nobody should expect anything less than victory, she said.
In special sports
event also decided at the cultural
centre venue, Delta again stole the show by winning gold in the Men’s
Team Class 1-5 Wheelchair TableTennis. Edo state got a silver for their effort
while Imo came behind in a joint third position with Oyo state.
In the
women’s wheelchair Team 1-5. Imo emerged victorious while Delta came second. Ondo and Edo
were joint third.
Sixteen states are
taking part in the wheel chair
Table Tennis while 31 states sent in participants to the four-day junior
championship.
One of the coaches
attached to the Delta State team, Taiwo Ariyo said all the athletes from Delta
State would do well in the competition.
He said though he
expected some form of challenge from other statesbut noted that such would do little to change the table at the
end of the event.
