Saraki begs Nigeria’s creditors to cancel debts

By  Demola Akinyemi
Thursday, July 01, 2004

ILORIN: GOVERNOR Bukola Saraki of Kwara State has pleaded with the international community to cancel Nigeria’s debt as a compensation, for the successful peace initiative roles the country was playing in  African countries and the sub-region, among others. He made the call in the executive chambers, Government House, Ilorin while briefing journalists on the outcome of his two weeks trip to Atlanta Georgia State in United States of America, on the invitation of Kwara State Association in  Northern America.According to him, “First today, we received the High Commissioner of Sierra Leone, who was thanking Nigeria for the role they played in the regional area in bringing peace to Sierra-Leone.

That cost huge amount of money, and a lot of efforts that could not be quantified were put into that. Those kinds of roles Nigeria play, there must be some kinds of compensation for that, based on that alone, I believe  the international communities should cancel Nigeria’s debts”.

The Governor also urged the international communities to consider the reasons adopted for the cancellation of debts of Iraq and others in the cancellation of Nigeria’s debt “based on the same argument that the big powers like Iraq and co were forgiven because they were ruled by dictators, they should apply the same principle here too because we’ve had dictators ruling us.

We need that kind of break”, he explained. Lamenting that the issue of debt cancellation is interwoven with politics, Governor Saraki, stressed that there is always a problem of inflow of cash and privileges for the development of debtor nations.
