Military Pensioners have written to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, requesting her to immediately release funds meant for the settlement of their ten months pension arrears or face a protest march on his ministry.
The letter which was copied to the Director-General, Budget, Mr. Bode Augusto, alleged that the non-payment of their pension in the last ten months was due to the refusal of the ministry to release such funds to the Military Pension Board.
The military pensioners claimed that they had enough evidence from their investigations to the effect that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and her colleagues in the ministry have failed to pay the needed money to the board.
“We have chosen to alert you of this danger as a result of our investigations that after the passage of the 2004 bill, your ministry has refused to release money to offset our nine months of arrears of payment.
““After our investigations to the House of Rep,and the senate, including the Ministry of Defence, we have discovered that the bottleneck leading to the non-payment of our arrears originate from your ministry and so we have chosen to intimate you with our intension to shift our protest ground from the states to Abuja, the Federal Capital and if we die then we are ready. ““If we are allowed to launch our protest on Abuja, then we assure you that no amount of security in your ministry will stop us from displaying our annoyance and vengeance on your ministry””, the group said in a letter signed by its national president, Comm. Benson Eromafuru, a copy of which was brought to Vanguard office. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s Special Assistance, Media, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, could not be reached for his reaction, as his phone line was said not to be available.
The pensioners had earlier threatened to kill the Minister of Defence, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, whom they accused of refusing to pay their entitlements.
