KATSINA—Katsina State Government says it would soon recruit 10,000 teachers out of which 7,000 would be holders of the National Certificate on Education [NCE].State Commissioner for Education, Dr Mustapha Mohammed Inuwa who made this known in Katsina yesterday said the new teachers would improve education in both primary and secondary schools in the state.
Inuwa spoke while briefing newsmen on the impasse between the government and the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers [NUT] over alleged non-payment of entitlements of teachers which led to a strike action.He said that 64 primary school headmasters who were suspended would not be recalled until full investigations were conducted on their activities just as he vowed that government would implement the policy of no-pay, no-work to the letter over the issue.
The Commissioner said that the state government had provided all the necessary assistance to the education sector in the last five years especially in the area of structural development, provision of teaching materials, recruitment of staff and trainings which the teachers failed to acknowledge.
lnuwa further said the NUT in the state decided to embark on strike without channeling their grievances to appropriate authorities pointing out however that teachers in three local governments including Sabuwa, Dandume, Matazu and parts of Kankia in the state would receive their June salary for not participating in the strike.
He also said that education secretaries had been directed to mobilize headmasters to reopen schools for continuation of lessons just as he restated government’s resolve to dialogue with the N.U.T officials in the state with a view at ending the strike. In another development in Katsina,Talba Strikers Football Club of Katsina has qualified for the second round of this year’s National Challenge Cup Football competitions which entered its preliminary stage.
The club defeated Akwa United of Akwa Thorn by two goals to one at Keffi town ship Stadium last Thursday.With this development the club has now moved to the second round of the competition and would play a yet to be named team by the Nigeria Football Association, Abuja.A statement signed by the club chairman, Umar Isyalcu Ogunse enjoined the players to remain disciplined, focused and good ambassadors of Katsina State in the remaining matches.
Ogunse also commended the efforts of the club proprietor Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim, Talban Katsina as well as Katsina State Government for their continued assistance to the club.
