Petrol dealers threaten strike in Abia

By Vincent Ujumadu
Thursday, July 01, 2004

UMUAHIA — MEMBERS of Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN) in Abia State have threatened to stop selling fuel in the state over alleged extortion of money from its members by members of the task force on petroleum set up by the state government. Chief Brownhill Okwandu who is the president of PEDAN for the South East said in an interview that government appears to be chasing shadows by the way it is handling the issue of scarcity of  petroleum products in Abia state. His words: “We are not happy the way government is handling this issue.

It should first identify the cause of the problem before attempting to solve it. The problem in the petroleum industry does not lie with the dealers. For instance, Aba depot of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has not loaded fuel for anybody since Friday last week and that is why many dealers go to Lagos to buy. I had thought that since government has introduced deregulation, people should be allowed to sell based on the price they procured their product."

According to him, if fuel is sold at N41 in Lagos, from where many marketers buy, it would not be too much to sell it N50 per litre in the east considering the cost of transportation. He said government should make the products  available instead of using task forces which are extorting money from petroleum dealers and confiscating their products.

He suggested that instead of setting up task force on petroleum government should assign the task force to handle the problem of environmental sanitation, warning that if the task force continues to harrass his members they will withdraw their services.”
