UMUAHIA — THERE has been a renewed move by the border community of Itumbauzo autonomous community in Bende Council Area of Abia State to join their neighbouring Akwa Ibom State over alleged neglect by Abia State authorities. Traditional ruler of the commmunity, Eze Chima Ndom said that his people decided to be part of Akwa Ibom because all the problems confronting his community which he earlier brought to the notice of the state government were yet to be addressed.
Among the problems were the absence of social amenities and non appointment of people from the area into positions of prominence. Eze Ndom said that although his community is part and parcel of Abia State, going by the decision of the peoplethey have been enjoying amenities from their neighbouring Akwa Ibom adding that authorities of that state have promised to develop his community if he agrees to be part of the state.
Worried by the latest development, Abia State deputy governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor invited the royal father to his office to find out the true story. At a meeting which lasted several hours, the deputy governor assured the royal father that government was already doing something to assist the people.
For instance, he said that Bende local government authorities have started grading roads in the area, while Governor Orji Uzor Kalu has approved the appointment of Eze Ndom as a member of the state council of traditional rulers..
Kalu’s special assistant on boundary matters, Major Francis Onuoha told Vanguard that although the people were free to decide which state to belong to, such a decision should not be allowed to degenerate into violence as was about to happen in Itumbauzo.
He promised that the state government would definitely look into their problems and advised the people of the area not to think that government was discriminating against them. According to him, it is God that put people wherever they found themselves and urged them to be patient as the present administration in the state was prepared to take development to all parts of the state without discrimination.
