PTI teachers, students differ on merger with UNIBEN
From Chido Okafor,
Warri

THE decision by President Olusegun Obasanjo to upgrade the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, to a degree awarding institution by merging it with the University of Benin, has been viewed differently by the students.

The students on the one hand are eager to benefit from the merger by graduating with degrees instead of diplomas, and cannot wait for the exercise to commence.

While the lecturers and the management are expressing fear that the merger might affect their fat salaries and allowances when merged with University of Benin; their salaries may be restructured to the universities commission's prescriptions, they pointed out.

A statement by the P.T.I. Students Union Government, signed by its President, Ehwerherume Peter and Secretary General, Erese Efosa, said "the entire students body of the PTI, Effurun, are very delighted."

The students added that by the upgrading, graduates of the PTI could now compete favourably with their degree-holding counterparts from other institutions.

But the lecturers and management, through the president of the PTI Alumni Association, Mr. Solomon Edebiri, criticised the proposed merger arguing that the it would destroy the unique nature of the institute as a specialised one set up to service the oil industry.

Edebiri pointed out that the committee that made the recommendation for the merger had no comprehensive representation, as stakeholders in the institute were not consulted or represented in the committee.
