Labour Act in Bad Faith - NLC
  • Obasanjo is vindictive, says ICFTU
    From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said the proposed Bill for an Act to amend the Trade Unions Act was done in bad faith and in vengence by President Olusegun Obasanjo in order to cow the Congress.

Labour President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole disclosed this while addressing a press conference after Labour Central Working Committee (CWC) met to deliberate on three key issues - review of the last strike on fuel increase, proposed amendment to trade union Act and the response to the Pension Bill passed resources.

In the same vein, the International Conference of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) accused Obasanjo of being vindictive over the protests in the price of petroleum products, saying the bill is meant to weaken and emasculate the NLC.

Oshiomhole noted that no law is ever passed in anger even under past military regimes and urged the government to reflect on the danger of destroying the civil society and particularly for the President to consider the long term interest of the country before sending the Bill to the National Assembly.

"We are unanimous that the Act is being drafted in bad faith and it is a product of bitterness. In an open society laws are not made out of vengeance or out of anger. Even under military regimes you don't make decrees out of annoyance.

"We have resolved to appeal to the National Assembly to take a long term interest of the country into account and to appreciate that NLC has not pursed a selfish agenda

"We are convinced that NLC has been fair and has tried to take a middle of the road position in our relationship with government. On a number of critical issues, congress has co-operated with the government", Oshiomhole said.
