Gowon Decries Settler/indigene Mentality From Jare Ilelaboye in Katsina Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon has stressed the need for Nigerians to stop calling themselves settlers or indigenes wherever they find themselves in any part of the country, as it is against principle, which the country has been fighting to project. Gowon who was answering reporters questions in Katsina yesterday said "I am more of a Zaria indigene than Plateau indigene because according to him his parent brought him to Zaria at the age of two years and since then I have been living in Zaria, in Kaduna State, where he has come t o know as home." He said Nigerians should be able to live and claim where they reside in spite of being from another state in the country saying that unity is strength and everybody should be able to accommodate one another. The former Head of State, who was reacting to a question based on an edict promulgated in Plateau in 1976 in that state which made anybody who lives in Plateau for ten years as indigene pointed out that although he was not aware of the edict which came into being at that time, he stressed the importance of tolerance among Nigerians wherever they may recide to earn their living. On the sovereign national conference, General Gowon said he was totally against its conveyance since sovereignty belongs to everybody in the country adding that the only thing we can do in the country was to convey a meeting to iron out any difference among the various ethnic group in the country. "As far as I am concerned, he said "I believe in one Nigeria and that if there is any problem we can solve it through dialogue. He said the National Assembly as presently constituted can be able to look into the laws that can make the country peaceful instead of holding any national conference.
