Tribunal: Appeal Court President Flays Litigants' Antics From Lillian okenwa in Abuja President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru Abdullahi has criticised the activities of some litigants who he accused of deliberately slowing the process of the tribunals to achieve their selfish ends. Speaking at the valedictory court session held in Abuja yesterday in honour of Justice Michael Eyaruoma Akpiroroh, a Justice of the Rivers Division of the Appeal Court, Abdullahi said, "Last month at this very Court Hall, I drew attention to the dire situation that the judiciary had found itself in a tight situation as a result of Election Petitions and the desperation of litigants hell bent on drawing the hand of the clock of the judiciary backwards in order to achieve their selfish ends." Also speaking at the occasion, Chief Ebun Sofunde, SAN, expressed concern that the relevant statute which pegs the retirement age of judges has deprived the Courts and the nation from benefiting from the wealth of experience of people like Justice Akpiroroh who he said still had a lot to offer the Country. Sofunde noted that with retirement age pegged at 70 years for Justices of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, the judiciary is fast losing people with lots of experience and maturity. He also called for the improvement of facilities in the Courts, regretting that in this age, judges still write in long hand.
