NEPAD Not Meant to Compete With AU - Obasanjo From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday, asked captains of industry to think holistically in the concept of the New Partnership for Africa's Develop-ment (NEPAD) when making investments, producing or executing projects. Speaking at the inauguration of the NEPAD Business Group - (NBG-Nigeria) at the State House, Obasanjo also emphasised that NEPAD was not created though to compete with the African Union (AU). The President who also noted that the NEPAD was complementary to the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) recently introduced by the Federal Government, said "the aim is for us at the political level to create conducive environment for business to also perform on the basis of global African platform." Obasanjo pleaded with the private sector "to think holistically in the context of NEPAD because unless you do that, we will not be able to achieve what we want. We are moving in such a way that sooner than later, we would be able to have free movement of goods." He urged them "to talk NEPAD, sleep NEPAD, plan NEPAD, execute NEPAD and reap NEPAD. It is an African programme designed by Africans, owned by Africa, meant to propel Africa forward and you are part and parcel of it in the African business world and particularly in the Nigerian business world." While asking NBG-Nigeria to show active interest in the activities of the recently created African Capital Market Forum (ACMF) made up of 22 stock exchanges on the continent, the President said "it is therefore imperative that NBG-Nigeria be seen to promote reform in the existing financial and effective networking."
