House Summons 91 Contractors over Fertiliser Supply
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja
Following alleged sharp practices in the supply of fertilisers under the Fertiliser Revolving Fund (FRF), the House of Representatives has summoned 19 contractors to appear before it to explain why they defaulted in the supply of the commodity to States.
Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Hon Ahmad Lawan who addressed the press yesterday claimed that, "most of the contractors have not delivered up to 50 percent of their consignments while in some states, he observed that the delivery ratio was less than 20 percent which necessitates their being summoned.
"The Committee has come to the conclusion that the programme of fertilizer supplies and deliveries to states is undermined and threatened by the failure of the majority of the contractors to deliver. In similar vein, the programme as operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development needs to be overhauled to make it more efficient, effective and result-oriented.
"But as an interim measure, we have already dispatched invitation letters to all the 91 contractors, inviting them for discussions on their inability to fulfill their contractual obligations", he explained.
Lawan said their tour of the states to monitor compliance of the fertilizer supply compliance showed that there were adulterated products in two states, which he failed to name, and that there were still some teething problems in the supply chain, which made the product scarce.
On why the committee was summoning contractors without any mention of the Ministry of Agriculture under whose portfolio the fund was operated, Lawan said they were taking things a step at a time and would have to invite the Ministry later, but stressed that they needed to know why the consignments were not available as and when due.
