Political Scientists Fault FG's Reforms, Emergency Rule From Chuks Okocha in Abuja Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) yesterday concluded its annual conference slamming some government reform programmes and the Plateau State emergency rule, describing them as unconstitutional and dangerous to the survival of democracy. The NPSA in a statement signed by its National President, Professor Adele Jinadu said, "A crippling civilian dictatorship, lack of respect for due process, and the absence of the culture of rule of law and non-independent judiciary have resulted in increasing erosion of the democratic landscape. In particular, the declaration of the State of Emergency in Plateau State, in flagrant violation of the letters and spirit of the Constitution points to the danger posed to the consolidation of democracy by the present authoritarian tendencies at all levels of government." On some government reform programmes, the association observed that, "uncritical adoption of neo-liberal macro-economic policies and the aggressive pursuit of privatization and deregulation which have been articulated in the National Economic Empower-ment and Development Stra-tegy (NEEDS) of the Obasanjo government poses inherent danger to the survival of democracy in Nigeria."
