Northern CAN to Shun Unity Confab From Agaju Madugba in Kaduna and Yakubu Musa in Kano The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has announced its decision to boycott next week's Northern unity convention being convened by Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, on behalf of the Northern states governors. The weeklong programme is expected to begin in Kaduna on July 5. Faulting the convention in a statement signed by CAN chairman, for the 19 states in the North, Archbishop Peter Jatau, and secretary, Elder Saidu Dogo in Kaduna yesterday, CAN noted that there should have been sufficient and widespread consultations of all stakeholders in the proposed convention. According to CAN, "no doubt, we believe strongly that there is a political undertone in the proposed convention, more so when the 19 Northern governors have also been slated to discuss the issue of power shift and the inauguration of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) new leadership, as part of the programme of events. "In view of the foregoing, CAN Northern states shall not attend the convention. We also call on all Christian leaders in the North to boycott the proposed convention." Meanwhile, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has taken a swipe at Northern governors over their proposed stakeholders meeting on ethno-religious crisis, saying the governors lack the moral justification to convene such a meeting.
