Yar'Adua Commends Foundation's Guinea Worm Eradication Effort

Governor Umaru Musa Yar'Adua of Kastina State has commended the Yakubu Gowon foundation for its effort to ensure the complete eradication of guinea worm in the areas, which the ailment is endemic. The foundation is working in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Carter foundation in the disease control programme.
Yar'Adua made the commendation yesterday when members of the Foundation led by its president and former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon called at Government House, Kastina.
According to the governor, the state would continue to be grateful to the former leader for his campaign against the upsurge of the disease in the state most especially in the Matazu Local Government Council.
He said the activities of the Foundation could not be quantified considering the work and energy it had committed to the scheme of eradicating the guinea worm scourge in various parts of the country, adding that the state government would continue to assist financially to carry the Foundation along in the state.
Governor Yar'Adua pointed out that the mark and activities of General Gowon in the scheme would remain indelible in his mind as people who benefitted from the eradication of guinea worm would always be happy about their condition at all times.
He then accepted the request of the Foundation to release one of its medical personnel, Dr Jubril Mohammed to continue to serve the organisation in his present capacity.
Earlier, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) told Yar'Adua that the fight against eradication of guinea worm disease which began in 2001 in the state had finally ensured the complete eradication of diseases through the provision of clean water in the affected areas.
He said as at 2003 in the affected areas, only one case of the disease was pending and commended the state government for providing potable water in the affected local council.
