Commissioner Seeks Sustained Approach to Women Empowerment
Lagos
By Shaka Momodu

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Joke Orelope-Adefulire has called for a vigorous approach to maintain economic empowerment for women so that they could be self-employed.

The commissioner made the call at the closing ceremony and presentation of Certificates of Attendance to the fourth batch of Two-Week Skills Acquisition Programme for Women in Ikorodu Division held at Ikorodu Central Local Government Secretariat, saying such approach would see to a considerable improvement in their economic status.

This approach, Orelope-Adefulire said would take into consideration the inputs of all stakeholders such as Government at all levels, Organised Private Sector, Non-Governmental and Community Based-Organisations including individual philanthropists who, through concerted efforts, ensure that women are empowered.

While commenting on the State as a mini-Nigeria, she pointed out that the attendant negative consequences of such society which include poverty has taken its toll more on women, adding that efforts should be geared towards its reduction.

She stated the state government's commitment to reduce poverty especially among women through the introduction of the skills acquisition programmes for women, which are designed to create, improve and sustain the promotion of economic well-being.

Apparently satisfied by the success rate at which participants have been able to learn their chosen skill, the Commissioner further said that Epe and Badagry Divisions of the State would also benefit as the programme has been implemented in Ikeja, Ikorodu and Lagos Island.
