NGO Educates women on breast examination Enugu From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu With the rising cases of breast cancer in Nigeria, women have been advised to cultivate the habit of engaging in self-examination of their breasts to avoid being caught unawares by the deadly disease. Executive Director of Women Cancer Care (WCC), Mrs. Ogugua Nwankwu, gave the advise yesterday at a workshop on Breast Self-examination held at WCC Centre, Enugu, where women were taught the techniques of self-examination of their breasts. She emphasized the need for women to know about breast cancer, saying that unlike HIV/AIDS that has occupied a prominent position in people's consciousness, about 70 per cent of Nigerian women are still ignorant of breast cancer. Nwankwu said her NGO has taken up the challenge of creating awareness and educating women on the deadly scourge of breast cancer by taking the campaigns to churches, market places and other gatherings of women. She regretted that ignorance and superstition have combined to make women easy vicitims pointing out that though breast cancer is terminal disease, it could be managed if detected early enough. The WCC director therefore urged the women to start examining their breasts immediately they reach menopause for early detection of the cancerous lump.
