FERMA Spends N30m on Bayelsa Roads Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenagoa Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has so far received N30 million for the rehabilitation of Bayelsa State roads under the Operation 500 Roads Phase I, initiated by the Minister of Works, Chief Adeseye Ogunlewe. Conducting members of the monitoring committee and newsmen round a section of the Yenagoa-Mbiama road, which serves as the gateway to the oil and gas rich state, the Federal Controller of Works in Bayelsa State, Mr. Chukwunwike Uzo, said contrary to the belief in certain quarters only N30 million has been received for the rehabilitation of federal roads in the state. "It is true that N10 million was approved for each state monthly since January 2004. But it is not automatic. You have to show evidence of what you did with earlier disbursement before another one is given to you. Therefore, it is wrong for anyone to say that Bayelsa State has received N60 million since the exercise started. The actual amount is N30 million as at today that I'm talking to you," he explained. The Federal Controller of Works attributed the delay in the remittance of more money to the state on the need to adhere strictly to what he called "financial guidelines under the civil service rules." He lauded Federal Government for giving serious attention to rehabilitation of its roads in the country, pointing out that "Federal Government through FERMA has saved million of lives and properties." He explained that the camp undertaken by his office in the state is at advance stage, even as he described the completed federal highway camp in the state as "the best in the country." Apart from office blocks, 2 boreholes, a water treatment plant, standby generator, and tennis court were also provided.
