Police Chief Warns Against Illegal Checkpoints Jigawa From Bala Nasir in Dutse Jigawa State Police command has issued a stern warning to all policemen mounting illegal checkpoints in the state. This was disclosed by the commissioner in charge of the command, Alhaji Saleh Abubakar in an interview with newsmen. He said complaints about these illegal checkpoints were flooding his office, especially on market days, adding that most of these checkpoints were mounted illegally and the personnel that used to mount them were bad eggs in the force. "We can no longer sit back and allow bad eggs tarnishing our good image," he said. Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) recently lodged similar complaints against such checkpoints and officials of the union in the state took the matter up with the police commissioner. The police commissioner therefore embarked on an operations to lead a team of surveillance, charged with the responsibility of identifying all the illegal checkpoints especially on market days anywhere in the state. "Whoever is caught," according to the commissioner, by this team would be dismissed from service. There is no point harassing innocent people going about their lawful businesses," he said. It was alleged that some policemen in the state have formed the habit of harassing innocent people especially those from villages who come to weekly markets.
