CLO Condemns Renewed Offensive on MASSOB Enugu From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has condemned the police for its renewed repression of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), saying the police was engaging in misplaced aggression against a peaceful and non-violent organisation. In their ongoing offensive against the movement, the police have arrested no fewer than 60 members of MASSOB across Nigeria and detained them without trial. But the CLO in a statement signed by its director, South-east zone, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, expressed "serious concern" over the continued violation of the constitutional rights of MASSOB members to freely associate, since there was nothing to show that the movement was engaging in violent pursuits. "The CLO condemns the harassment and unrest of people merely for exercising their rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly. The CLO is not aware that membership of an organisation such as MASSOB or holding a membership identity card of such an organisation constitutes an offence under our laws or any regional or international instrument," the statement said. The rights group specifically pointed out that the police arrested and detained 14 members of MASSOB at Akama Oghe in Ezeagu Local Government area of Enugu State on June 4, the detainees aged between 50 and 70 years have been languishing in detention.
