NULGE Protests Workers' Redeployment Imo From: Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri.Workers of the 27 local government areas in Imo State yesterday embarked on a peaceful rally protesting against state government over the recent redeployment of some principal officers of the councils to the state civil service. The workers, who were led by the National President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Dr. Deji Akinwalere, marched through major streets in Owerri, especially Whetheral road to Government House. At the Government House, the workers, who were chanting war songs, were received by the Acting Governor, Chief Ebere Udeagu, who maintained that government's stand was irrevocable. He noted that workers at the local governments should have hailed the new policy rather than condemn it, saying the essence was to improve on local government administration in the state. He added that government was waiting for the outcome of the suit filed by NULGE in the court against the redeployment, noting that "whatever is the outcome, our government will abide by it." Speaking earlier, NULGE national president said the new policy ran foul of the constitution and Local Government Service Commission Act and was completely unacceptable to them.
