'Imo Airport'll Be Made International' Ebonyi From: Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Plans are underway to elevate the Imo Airport in Owerri to an International airport as the former Minister for Aviation, Mrs. Kema Chkwe, had upgraded its facilities, said Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Chris Nshii. Nshii, who disclosed this in Abakaliki while addressing newsmen on Wednesday, explained that Federal Government as well as his committee started to give preference to Owerri instead of Enugu because of the enormous facilities provided at the airport in the past three years during the tenure of Chikwe as the Aviation Minister. The Senate committee chairman stated that N350 million had been approved by government for the provision of modern facilities at the airport. "The Imo Airport was planned right from inception to be an international airport. The airport has been so expanded that both the runway and terminal building can accommodate big aircraft whereas the Enugu Airport has remained obsolete due to abandonment and would therefore cost much to upgrade," he said. Nshii said "Enugu airport has been abandoned, there is no standard landing system and the runway is shabby. Our concern is to have an international airport in the East and if we pursue two, we may lose all."
