Hallmark Bank Plc has pledged to support the activities of the West African Bankers' Association (WABA) in the areas of service and logistics to further strengthen the result oriented leadership of the association.
The Chairman/Chief Executive of the bank, Sir Marc Wabara made this pledge yesterday in Lagos at the monthly meeting of the executive council of the association hosted by the bank.
Wabara who was represented by the bank's Executive Director, Credit and Marketing, Mr. Edward Ajayi said that the coming into being of the association is a welcome development, which will boost the West African sub-region cooperation with each other economically.
"The dire state of the economy in the sub-region and the crucial role banks play in achieving rapid economic development has obviously made the existence of this association most desirable", he said.
He listed the derivable advantages of a close economic integration by West African nation states to include reduction in transaction costs, ensuring lower market access barriers and integrate segmental national markets for similar goods and services.
According to him, these advantages will save resources from being wasted on unnecessary parallel economic activities.
In response, the President of the association, Mr. Chika Mordi of Standard Trust Bank Plc said that the aims and objectives of the association in the sub-region are to provide a forum for exchange of information on banking practice and promoting and strengthening of correspondent relationships among banks.
Others include serving as an intermediary between the banks in the sub-region and the committee of the Association of West African Central Banks (ACCBS) and contributing to the development of trade, commerce and industry as well as agriculture.
Mordi said that the association will amend its objectives to include the role of policy advocacy and self regulation of its members to be in line with other trade and banking associations in other parts of the world.
