Trading: Brewery Sector Upstages Banks

The breweyr sector yesterday outclassed the banking sector by recording the highest turnover for the day in the Nigeria Stock Exchange.
The sector recorded a total turnover of N482.6 billion invested on 3.9million shares exchanged in 664 deals.
The sub-sector analysis revealed that Guinness recorded a turnover of N375.5 billion on 2.3 million shares in 197 deals while Nigerian brewery recorded a turnover of N107.1 billion on 1.6 million shares exchange in 474 deals.
The banking sector 34.9 million shares were traded with N225.8 billion at 1.674 deals. A breakdown shows that First Bank had the largest turnover of N73.6 billion invested in 2.6 million shares in 523 deals. It was followed by Union Bank with 1.5 million shares arriving at N54.02 billion in 391 deals.
Access bank followed with N1.8 billion invested in 379.1 million shares exchanged in 33 deals.
Food and beverages and tobacco sector at the exchange recorded a total turnover of N98.5 billion traded in 1.2 million share in 300 deals. The sub-sector showed that Nestle Nigeria Plc came up with N50.8 billion with the sale of 298.6 million shares exchanged in 52 deals. Nigerian Bottling Company had a turnover of N25.4 billion with 367.4 million shares in 57 deals.
In the gainers' chart Nestle Nigeria Plc came first by making a profit of N1.50 to close as N170.00. Flour mill came second by recording a profit of N0.85 to close at N22.20. UBA opened with N11.05, made a profit of N0.55 to close at N11.60. Ashaka Cement also opened with N20.50 with N0.50 as a change to close at N21.00. While Oceanic Bank that has just been enlisted by introduction into the Nigerian Stock Exchange opened with N4.24 with a change of N0.21 to close at N4.45.
Top 5 losers on the chart showed Conoil Plc losing N8.94 on N187.95 as the opening price to close at N179.01. Texaco Nigeria Plc followed suit by recording a loss of N5.94 at the opening price of N188.94 to close at N183.00 while Guinness was at a loss recording N2.00 as change with N161.00 as the opening price to close at N159.00. Nigerian Bottling Company also recorded N1.50 as loss, opening as N70.50 and closing at N69.00.
The total turnover recorded after trading at the Nigerian Stock Exchange revealed that N928 billion was invested with 45.3 million shares exchanged in 3,648 deals.
