SEC introduces capital market curriculum
in secondary schools
By Sanya Adejokun
Senior Correspondent, Abuja
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has
developed a curriculum for the introduction of capital market as a course of
study in the secondary schools.
SEC’s Director-General, Dr. Suleyman Ndanusa,
who spoke in Abuja at the commencement of the National Capital Market Quiz
Competition for Secondary Schools, also disclosed that the commission has even
gone beyond the secondary school level by successfully collaborating with the
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) on the introduction of capital market studies in
the institution.
According to him, these are in fulfillment of section
8 of the Investments and Securities Act (ISA), which “has empowered the
commission to promote investors’ education and the training of all
categories of intermediaries in the securities market”. Ndanusa said the
secondary schools’ curriculum was developed in conjunction with the
Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and that under the
programme, capital market-related topics, such as economics, commerce, business
studies and accounts will be examined by WEAC and NECO at ordinary level soon.
He disclosed that the commission is presently developing teaching materials,
consisting of textbooks, workbooks and audiovisual materials for the project.
The director-general told the audience, gathered
inside the boardroom of the commission, that SEC has conducted enlightenment
campaigns in 25 states of the federation during which state and local
government officials and the business communities were sensitised and involved
in discussions on the existence and benefits of the capital market to individuals,
businesses, the state and local governments.
