Following
the huge success recorded in previous partnerships held with Nigerian
investors, especially in the telecommunications sector, some South
African hospitality companies have shown interest in investing and
boosting the nation’s tourism industry.
Speaking
during an interactive session, the Sales Manager, African and Middle
East, Southern Sun Hotels, Mrs. Thulile Klassen, stated that “it became
imperative for us to come and say a big thank you to our teeming
customers,” adding that “Nigerians
have steadily ranked highest on its patronage list. For this, we have
come to invest through shared interest and profit with our Nigerian
hospitality businessmen and women, while promising better services.”
Confirming
this also, the Managing Director, Legend Tours and Transfers, Mr. Faiz
Noordien, informed that “Nigeria was instrumental to the final liberation
from apartheid of South Africa. Going by this, we are therefore seeking
to continue the mutual and beneficial relationship we have continued to
share even after our freedom 10 years ago”. However, while acknowledging
that much still needed to be done to curb the reported cases of growing
segregation between the whites and blacks, Noordien assured that in the
next two years, issues as this would have been reduced to the barest
minimum because of the concerted efforts of both the South African
Tourism Board and the government. He added: “This is why we have been
recording influx of tourists into SA because we are now seen as not only
security safe country, but also a place where globally, every one can
call home.”
Noordien, whose company is a
member of many recognised international tourism organisations, said that
because the rate of crime has drastically reduced, especially in
Johannesburg, “we have been recording heavy influx of tourists. In fact,
most people now prefer to visit South Africa instead of Europe as it used
to be.” Klassen, who promised tourists from Nigeria preferential
treatment whenever they
lodge at any of its strategically located hotels in South Africa, has
also assured Nigerians of special local dishes.
Klassen and Noordien also disclosed that there has been
encouraging response from target Nigerian investors since they arrived
the country last week.
