One time governor of Kaduna State and Minister of Communications,
Major-General Abubakar Tanko Ayuba has said that the annulment
of the June 12, 1993 presidential election was at the instance
of the Yorubas and not the making of former military president,
General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
"Very soon, and I mean very soon, IBB will come out to
name the Southerners, especially the Yorubas who insisted
the election should be annulled," Ayuba said in an interview
with Daily Sun in Dirin Daji, Kebbi State.
"IBB merely reacted to pressure from the people of the
South-West by annulling the election," Ayuba added.
"At the appropriate time he (IBB) will definitely name
those who pressurised him to annul the June 12 election,"
the former minister stated.
He said those who were asking IBB what he forgot at Aso Villa
that he wanted to go back and pick were not being fair to
him.
According to the former governor, "IBB, like any other
Nigerian, military or civilian, has the right to aspire to
the highest office in the country. The question of what he
forgot does not arise."
Similarly he disagreed with the insinuation that Obasanjo
handing over to Babangida would amount to military rule by
extension and a hijack of the polity.
"One thing we should not forget is the fact that these
retired Generals are also Nigerians and are no longer in the
army.
"It is not fair to say the Generals are hijacking the
leadership of the country. There is nothing absolutely wrong
in any former military man contesting an election, it’s
no hijack. However, what I will not like to see is for us
(former generals) to pack ourselves in one party for the purpose
of supporting IBB’s presidential ambition. Babangida
is one Nigerian who is courageous, intelligent, capable, highly
experienced and committed."
The former Communications Minister was in his Dirin Daji country
home to receive the conferment of the position of Special
Adviser on him by the National Solidarity Coalition based
in Minna, Niger State.
National Chairman of the Coalition, Alhaji Mahmud Ndatsu had
earlier referred to Ayuba as commander-in-chief of the IBB
Solidarity Movement and urged him to mobilise support for
Babangida’s presidential aspiration.
