Presidency Zoned to the North - Attah
By Ndubuisi Francis
As the controversy over which of the geo-political zones produces the Presidency for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah at the weekend differed with President Olusegun Obasanjo when he affirmed that the position had been zoned to the North.
Obasanjo had at the recent Presidential Media Chat denied knowledge of any zoning arrangement of the party's presidential ticket to the North, about a week after PDP's National Secretary, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor had stated that the North would take the slot in 2007.
But Attah who fielded questions from newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos Saturday night on return to the country after visits to the United States of America, Malaysia and United Kingdom, said he was aware that there was an unwritten agreement that the North should produce the next president.
Reminded that Obasanjo had declared that no geo-political zone has been penciled down for the plum position come 2007, Attah said: "In all honesty, I will not want to contradict my President whatever because he must be more current on issues than I am.
"But I certainly remember on an occasion when we were discussing on the issue of his(Obasanjo's) own second term, at the caucus of the party where it was agreed (gentleman's agreement)--nothing written, nothing signed.
"But it was a gentleman's agreement that he should go back for a second term and that after the South would have had two terms, it should go to the North. Whether the North will keep it for two terms or one term and it rotates and so on is another issue.
"But I clearly remember that caucus meeting where it was agreed that we will let the President have a second term but by 2007, it should go to the North", Attah declared.
Asked what geo-political divide should the number two position be zoned to based on his disclosure, the Akwa Ibom State Governor stated that the slot is not by election but by choice.
