House Passes 41 Bills in 12 Months

About 41 bills have been passed into law by the House of Representatives out of about 106 bills received by the House before the end of its 12 months of parliamentary session, the Deputy Speaker of the chamber, Hon. Austin Opara disclosed.
The Deputy Speaker who disclosed this at an interactive session with newsmen in Port Harcourt over the weekend declared that "as a parliament one achievement we are very proud of is that we have had a stable House, a rancor free House different from what we have in the past.
He said people should not interpret the good working relationship between the legislative and the other arms of government to means compromising as no amount of money is too much to achieve peace.
"People believe that we are stooges, we are toothless, that is not correct. The fact remains that we dialogue move. We talk with other arms of government that is why we have achieved more and maintain a stable House", he stated.
Opara further hinted that a committee has been set up in the House to come up with a legislative programme or agenda for the remaining period on the contract or programme the house has with the rest of Nigerians or masses.
Assessing the performance of the chamber within the first one year of law making process, Opara said "within this period, we have played mediating role between the executive and the labour" and even ensure that the price of petroleum products will not be increased unnecessarily and arbitrarily."
He said the bill passed into law also included ISPS code, the appropriation bills for the Federal Capital Territory and Plateau States, the labour reform pension bill, the consolidated bill on emergency rule in Plateau State.
The Deputy Speaker who described as unfortunate the claim by the sole administrator of Plateau State, that he will extend the period of the emergency rule in the crisis tore state.
