Why G-8 Must Cancel Our Debts, By Saraki From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State retuned to Ilorin after a two week investment drive to the United States of America (USA) and told the G-8 nations to reconsider their stand on the cancellation of the nation's debts. Saraki who spoke to newsmen on arrival in Ilorin noted that the Nigeria also has the features of debt forgiven nations like Afghanistan, Iraq etc. According to him, the nation was once ruled by dictators as those countries. But more importantly the governor pointed out, "our country has participated in and led peace missions to several African countries and you all know that these peace efforts are not for fun neither were they free lunch. They gulped a chunk of our resources. He lauded President Olusegun Obasanjo for his trouble-shooting efforts stressing for a complement of such efforts by stakeholders in the Nigerian nation. "All the qualities the G-8 nations considered in Iraq, Afghanistan and a host of other countries such as dictatorial governments, acute poverty, war etc in canceling their debts once upon a time featured in our country too." "The country was once in war, was once ruled by a dictator and still has a fair share of poverty, these reasons need to be considered too in us for the cancellation of our debt." He said the cancellation of the Nigeria's debt would serve as a compensation to the Big Brother roles the nation has played in ensuring peace and stability in the continent.
