Varsity Staff Oppose Bursar's Appointment From Omon-julius Onabu in Benin-City Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma, Edo State, is facing fresh strike threats from the Senior Staff Association (SSANU) following the decision of the state government to appoint an acting Bursar for the university. This the SSANU members consider antithetical to the laws governing the university. A statement signed by the association's, Chairman, Mr. A. E. Ogbeide, and General Secretary, Mr I. E. Dako, said the staff would down tools unless government stopped what they called unlawful interference. According to the report, government's decision to appoint Mr S. O. Omokaro of the state Ministry of Lands and Survey was predicated on the observation that the new Vice-chancellor of the university, Professopr Aigbomian, hails from Edo Central Senatorial district, just like Rev. Sunday Ojeifo, the man an interview panel had recently recommended for the job. Ojeifo had already completed a five-year tenure as Bursar, but he was said to have scored highest during the interview recently conducted for four of the five applicants for the position. One applicant reportedly did not show up for the interview, which followed series of newspaper advertisements after it became difficult to have interested persons apply for the position. The eleven-member panel was said to include the AAU Vice-Chancellor, chairman of the Governing Council and the registrar. However, members of the AAU chapter of SSANU, who have also received the sympathy of the non-academic staff, noted that the government's action on the secondment was in contravention of the Fourth Schedule of the AAU Law of 1999 as amended.
