Group Wants Greater Role for Youths

A non-governmental organ -isation, United Nations of Youths (UNOY), has asked the present political leaders to ehance youth participation in the polity.
The group said it has concluded arrangements to celebrate this year's United Nations Youth Day slated for August 12 in a big way.
In an interview with THISDAY over the weekend, National Executive President of UNOY, Prince Goodluck Obi, said "youth are described as leaders of tomorrow, but I say youths must be involved in strategic leadership structure to prepare them for tomorrow's challenges," adding that the organisation, which is made of 120 affiliate associations nationwide, has a week-long event starting from August 6 with a World Press conference.
The conference, according to him, would address major problems confronting youth in Nigeria, which have created so much tension in the country, adding that there would be an inter-denominational service and thanksgiving on August 8.
Obi hinted that the grand finale of the Youth Essay Competition would take place on August 9 and there would be Peace Walk on HIV/AIDS Awareness campaign across the country. He said UNOY would pay a courtesy call on the Minister of Youths and Development and his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Mr. Frank Nweke Jr and Professor Adeniji.
On the Youth Day, Obi said UNOY would organise its inaugural annual lecture, launch, its Youth Empowerment Centre and give awards to deserving Nigerians who have distiguished themselves in their humanitarian activities. Among notable Nigerians who would receive awards include founder of African Refugee Foundation (AREF), Ambassador Segun Olusola, Senator Umbi Tawar Wada, Professor Placid Njoku, Mrs. Olajunmoke Araba, Dr. Aderemi Desalu and Miss Edem Udosen.
The national president also said the organisation would round off its activities with muslim prayers.
Obi maintained that the future of youth lies in how much investment made today by the present crop of leaders, charging them to give more leadership roles to the youths in order to prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow.
