Cultism: Police Indict Judiciary, Dons
Kwara
Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
Two institutions, the judiciary and educational weekend came under the hard knocks of the police for their complicity in the lingering and rampant cultism cases in the society.
The Kwara State Police Command weekend said it used to do its best to arrest and prosecute any suspected cult member.
Police boss, Alhaji Muhammadu Dikko Abubakar, briefing newsmen on the latest exploits of his command, stated that "once suspects are taken to the court, we leave the rest to the judiciary and very unfortunately cases we considered unbailable are accorded bails by the courts."
Abubakar lamented instances where notorious cult members have been left off the hook by the judiciary only to go back to the society and engage in retaliatory attacks.
On the lecturers, the police boss accused them of encouraging cultist activities in their institutions by sheltering suspected cult members.
"Some of these professors are biological fathers of cult members and whenever we arrest any of them, you will see them rushing to us, pleading that we release their children," he noted.
But the command has always been going ahead by prosecuting such cultists only for the judiciary to release them under one guise or another.
He confirmed the last week's clashes by cult groups in Ilorin, the state capital which led to the killing of a Sport Festival Gold Medallist, Timbosun Awojare and Ismail Basambo at different locations in the city within 24 hours interval.
Abubakar also confirmed the arrest and prosecution of the killers of an official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), who was killed about three weeks ago by suspected cult members.
The police commissioner announced the arrest of 10 cult members including 6 secondary school pupils at different locations in the state capital.
"I can assure you that all those arrested are going to be the first beneficiaries of the new edict on cultism in the state."
He tasked parents to be wary on the sources of wealth of their children, who are displaying wealth but without such family background.
The police boss also called on students union groups in tertiary institutions to mobilise themselves to confront known cult members in their schools.
