Don Okays Psychriatic Drug Lagos By Godwin Haruna Following the controversy trailing the attempt to launch GlaxoSmithkline's antidepressant drug, Paxil (registered in Nigeria as Seroxat), a consultant psychiatrist with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Associate Professor J. D. Adeniyi, has said the drug was good for adults. Adeniyi, who was part of the group that conducted the clinical trials for GlaxoSmithkline in Nigeria before it was registered, stated that depression and suicidal traits were the common symptoms of psychiatric patients. Addressing a press conference at the premises of the company at the weekend, he noted that of the 75 persons used for the clinical trials in three centres of Lagos, Ibadan and Sokoto, nearly all of them improved considerably in their conditions without adverse effects. Adeniyi's clarifications followed the clean bill of health given to the pharmaceutical company by the Director General of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Dora Akunyili last week. Akunyili had stated that the drug was registered by the Agency in September 2000 after due process which took about four years to be concluded. "Although the product had been subjected to clinical evaluation in other countries, NAFDAC insisted on local trials which is prerequisite for the registration of new chemical entities in Nigeria," the Agency had stated.
