500,000 Cocoa Seedlings for Farmers Ogun From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta Ogun State Government has announced, 500,000 cocoa seedlings for sale to farmers in the state at subsidised rate. For the first time in the history of the state, farmers have been provided with one tonne foundation seeds of cotton to plant during this year's planting season. Commissioner Agric -ulture and Forestry, Prince Bamidele Obadina, made this disclosure in Abeokuta during a meeting between ministry officials and farmers. Obadina said proscription of Farmers' Association of Nigeria by the Federal Government in 1999 which, gave rise to various groupsenhance farmers' fortune in the state. He, therefore, called on farmers to come together and form an apex association, which, will bring about a synergy in the activities of the association. At the end of the meeting, a 13 member steering committee chaired by the Elewo of Ilewo-Orile, Oba Michael Fatona, was set up to come out with modalities of bringing about a new association. The commissioner said the state government has equally approved the take-off of training centres in the three senatorial zones of the state to enhance farmers' performance. Restating government's determination to continue putting in place policies and programmes that will improve agriculture, Oba -dina said the state is poised to becoming a food basket of the nation.
