'Our Investment in Education Paying Off' Niger From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Niger State Governor, Abdulkadir Kure has said his huge investment on education has started to yield dividends as evident in the meritorious performance at the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) and the Senior Secondary Certificate Education (SSCE) by candidates from the state. The governor, who was elated about the leading position of the state at the just concluded NCEE, told THISDAY that he has no regret on the huge expenditure. He cited the pruning of the number of secondary schools when he assumed office in 1999 and the subsequent introduction of tuition fees in the post-secondary schools in the state as some of the reasons for the good performance. Expressing satisfaction on the performance of indigenes in WAEC and NECO, the governor said that as at 1999 only 456 students had five credits and above to qualify for admission into tertiary institutions. He however said that 1,794 students made it in 2000 while in 2001 the state had 2,175 students with five credits, while the result hit the peak in 2002 with 4,389 students. On primary education, the governor said the recruitment of 9,000 primary school teachers over the years have also seen a geometrical progression of pupils performance, which was evident in the result of the state at the 2004 National Common Entrance Examination. Kure also said that the enrolment figure at the primary level has witnessed a regular increase.
