Germany 2006: Algerian Coach Writes off Eagles
By Femi Solaja
The euphoria that greeted Super Eagles lone goal win and subsequent recent back to the top of the table in group D African World Cup qualifying series may be temporary if the analysis of the Algerian coach Robert Wasiege is anything to go by.
Moments after his team's lone goal loss to Nigeria at the National Stadium Abuja, the coach strongly believed that Super Eagles will not be ahead of his team at the end of the qualifying series because their standard of play fell below what is expected of a team that have array of star players in top clubs in Europe and have featured in the last three World Cup finals.
In an interview with THISDAYSports after the match Wasiege said his team was unlucky to have lost the match because they deserved at least a draw.
"We are unfortunate to have lost the match like that more so the lone goal was scored towards the end of the match. We use to have a lot of respect for the Eagles and this explained why we were a bit very cautious in the early part of the match but we later discover that your team is highly cautious and just a collection of superstars playing in European league.
"Our initial thoughts were that the Eagles would come out strongly because of the loss they recorded in Angola. We saw the desperation in them tactically we were better and at a time I had to urge my players to move forward and perhaps get the opener so as to put them under intense pressure in front of the restless home crowd.
"However, if we are to go by the three matches of your team I think we are better and it is very clear that your team will not survive the desert storm when they come for the return match next year in Algiers.
"I think my players showed too much respect for your team and it took them some time to know that they are equal to the task and upset your team," he pointed out.
