DFB Boss Faces Turbulent Meeting German football association (DFB) President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder could lose his job when the DFB executive hold an extraordinary meeting today following the national team's dismal performance at Euro 2004. Mayer-Vorfelder has been heavily criticised for his handling of the search to replace coach Rudi Voeller, who quit after Germany's first-round exit from the tournament in Portugal. German media have reported members of the board want DFB treasurer Theo Zwangziger to replace Mayer-Vorfelder as president. The 71-year-old may be asked to either resign at the meeting in Frankfurt or agree not to run for re-election in October, according to Germany's sport news agency SID. Mayer-Vorfelder has said he has no intention of bowing out and FIFA President Sepp Blatter expressed fears that it was not the right time for changes in the DFB as Germany prepares to host the 2006 World Cup. "When I think about the World Cup in 2006 in Germany, I have to say that this is not the time to raise doubts about the entire German football organisation," Blatter told reporters. "If that does happen, we at FIFA will be very, very angry." After the popular Voeller quit as national coach, Mayer-Vorfelder announced he would make the search for a replacement "a matter for the boss". German media panned him for not trying hard enough to keep Voeller and for not involving the rest of the executive board in the search for a replacement. The DFB's favoured candidate, former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, turned down their offer last Thursday, leaving Mayer-Vorfelder exposed to further criticism.
