'Pires, Henry Fought in Training'
French stars Thierry Henry and Robert Pires clashed during training in the lead-up to the Euro 2004 match with England, their former national coach Jacques Santini revealed.
The 52-year-old said that the Arsenal clubmates had come to blows just two days before the 2-1 victory over the English during what Santini described as a training session conducted in a highly charged atmosphere.
"There were several such training sessions that had a highly charged atmosphere about them," the Spurs bound manager revealed on French television station TF1.
When asked were the two players who had a fight with each other, Henry and Pires, Santini left no doubt as to their identity.
"You know well enough, the two players came from the same club," he said.
Santini added that following the incident he and his fellow coaches had tried to impose more control on the training sessions.
"All the sessions following the clash, we tried to control," said the former Lyon coach, who took over the national post in 2002.
Santini added the lessening of the tempo and competitive edge to the sessions may have played a part in affecting 'Les Bleus' aggressiveness when they played their matches.
Santini, whose decision to announce before the tournament started that he was leaving for Spurs has been criticised by some for its woeful timing, also added weight to England captain David Beckham's claim that the Real Madrid players like him were not fit by suggesting his chief playmaker Zinedine Zidane had not been in shape.
Beckham has been slammed by former Real boss Carlos Queiroz for making such claims and he has also been criticised by Portugal's Luis Figo.
"Zinedine Zidane (Beckham's Real Madrid team-mate) wanted to do too much as he wanted to have a successful Euro," said Santini.
"However, the Real players like David Beckham or Luis Figo weren't in good shape.
"Given those circumstances Zidane played as well as humanly possible."
