APCON's Concessionary Offer Ends July 31
The Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), the country's regulatory body for the practice of advertising will formally close its popular "Window of Opportunity" Scheme by July 31,2004.
The scheme, which began on April I, 2004, was aimed at absorbing people in the advertising industry, who do not possess academic qualification in advertising, mass communication, marketing or graphic arts, but whose experience spans between five and 10 years.
The gesture came in the heels of representations made by various sectors of the industry, whose staff were largely affected by Act 55 of 1998 (as amended by Act 93 of 1992), which made it mandatory for anyone engaged in any form of advertising to get registered by APCON.
The scheme, which is lauded by most industry players, has so far received tremendous response across the six geo-political zones of the country. Over one applications were received for the programme.
In view of the unanticipated large number of applications generated by the scheme, the Council, in order to ensure fair-play and equal opportunity for every affected person in the industry, rose from its 99th meeting, held in Kano on June 24, 2004, with a decision to extend the Window of Opportunity scheme.
The Council in a statement advised all prospective practitioners who were yet to take advantage of the rare opportunity to do so before the July 31 deadline, as it was unlikely that the window would be reopened.
The statement further stated that people both local and foreigners who do not see a need for registration would, with effect from August 2004 face the wrath of APCON, as the Council embark on a massive cleansing of the advertising industry so as to achieve a permanent level of sanity, which has since eluded the industry.
The Council promises to deploy all its available machinery and widen its monitoring network so as to achieve this objective. This is against the background that the Council has the full backing of the law to regulate and control advertising in all its aspects and ramifications.
