Dariye shouldn’t return - Jerry Useni

By Chesa Chesa

Correspondent, Abuja

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Jeremiah Useni, has strongly kicked against the reinstatement of suspended Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye after the initial six months of emergency rule in the state.

Useni, an indigene of the state, said in Abuja at the weekend that having been suspended for ineptitude, Dariye has nothing new to offer even after the six months.

“I will not want Dariye back after six months. If they say he is incapable, there is no need asking him to return. Is it during the time of suspension that he would have learned anything? No!” stated Useni, who accompanied a delegation of prominent citizens of the state to thank President Olusegun Obasanjo and the National Assembly for declaring and supporting the five-week old state of emergency.

He called for fresh elections to give the people another opportunity to elect a new governor, insisting that his party, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), swept the polls in the governorship election which Dariye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was announced the winner.

Useni urged that a further step be taken by suspending all council chairmen in the state because “most were merely installed by Dariye”.

He gave Sole Administrator Chris Alli a pass mark for the way he has handled affairs since he assumed duty, stating that he had not acted beyond his brief as alleged after the sacking of some public officers.

“Alli has not exceeded his brief. What brief? He should be given a free hand to restore peace. If that is done, peace will come back much quicker”, he said.
