Police arrest suspected cult members in Ilorin

By Dele Moses

Special Correspondent, Ilorin

The police in Kwara State have arrested some suspected cult members most of who are secondary school students.

Their arrest came on the heels of rampart violent cult attacks within the Ilorin metropolis in the last two weeks.

The attacks among rival cult groups reportedly claimed about six lives one of who was a student of one of the old generation schools in the town.

Most of the attacks took place at Princess, Sawmill and Opo-Malu roads, thus heightening apprehension among residents of the ancient town who fear for their lives.

The State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, who briefed journalists, said the suspects were arrested during their norcturnal meeting at Amusement Park, Ilorin by security operatives who acted on a tip off.

He said cult members who were arrested at the park included Kehinde Idris, Nafiu Adeyemo and Kehinde Abolarin who are secondary school students, Durojaiye Michael, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic and Joshua Olorunipa and Joshua Omosiji who live at Niger road Ilorin.

Others are Adewunmi Emmanuel, Wasiu Alabi, Suleiman Abdulfatai and Augustine Abiola Adebiyi.

He said the suspects confessed, during interrogation to be members of the Buccaneer group.  The police boss said the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of investigations by the police, adding that the secondary school students among them who are still minors would be charged to a juvenile court.

He bemoaned the increasing rate of involvement of students of post primary school in cult activities saying “only God knows what they will become when they get to higher institutions.”
