Row with Bola Tinubu baseless, says Ogunlewe

The frosty
relationship between Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu and Minister of
Works, Adeseye Ogunlewe, may soon thaw as the minister at the weekend
expressed his readiness to cooperate with the various committees set up
to address areas of disagreement between them.
Ogunlewe described the rift as
“baseless”, saying he is ready for a truce in the interest of Lagos
State. “The crisis is a needless one blown out of proportion by the
media,” he said in Lagos, adding that the various entreaties made to him
were healthy ones for the development of the state.
“There is no need for the
face-off. It must end. The people’s interests must be protected,” the
minister said, adding that he boycotted the peace meeting organised by
the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, because he was not comfortable with the
venue and the status of the Oba as an impartial arbiter.
It was proposed at a National
Executive Council (NEC) meeting last week with Vice President Atiku
Abubakar as the chairman that a joint Lagos State and Federal Government
committee be set up to resolve all areas of disagreement between the two
tiers of government.
Ogunlewe explained that once
the government decided to wade into any dispute all the combatants must
cooperate, stressing that he is ready to support the peace initiative.
The minister said Lagos deserve
to be given priority in the scheme of things and that for now, his main
concern is to ensure that roads in the country are motorable.
His words: “I am concentrating
on rehabilitating and maintaining the 500 roads target. But I have a
passion to the development of Lagos State. We have done 65 per cent of
our projected target and some are on course. If you travel to any part of
Nigeria, there is no doubt that you will see the difference”.
On the controversial $100
million World Bank loan guarantee that was hanging due to the prolonged
rift, Ogunlewe explained that his ministry became involved when the bond
was to be signed.
