Border
patrol: Nigeria to equip Niger’s police

The Nigeria Police
is to equip its Niger Republic counterpart with facilities for border
operations. This is a fall-out of the one-week official visit to that
country by a three-man committee set up by the Inspector General, Mr.
Tafa Balogun.
A member of the committee,
Amusa Bello, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, disclosed to Daily
Independent that the gesture became necessary after deliberations with
police and military authorities in that country on prospects and
modalities of forming a team with Nigerian security agencies, to
checkmate incidence of trans-border armed brigandage.
Bello, who commands the
Nigeria-Benin Republic joint border operations, revealed that lack of
patrol equipment and not political will could hamper collaboration between
Nigeria and Niger Republic.
“We were well received by our
hosts in Niger Republic. They have agreed to take part in joint border
operations with us, but on the basis that we meet their material
requirements for such operations. We will oblige them. They may not be as
fortunate economically as we are, but they understand the need to make
sure our common border is secured against infiltrations,” Bello said.
For reasons of time, the trip
to Chad has been deferred till when the committee would complete its
visit to Yaounde where it would highlight to Camerounian police and
gendarmes stakes for both countries in eliminating threats to security of
lives and property at the border, especially the porous Lake Chad
borderline.
To that end, the Police Commissioner
Azeez Mida-led committee would depart for Yaounde on Tuesday.
Reminded that Nigeria and
Cameroun have an unresolved land and maritime boundary dispute over
oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula, which might not make the Camerounian police
authorities very receptive to the idea of joint operations, Bello
retorted: “We do hope to be well received in Yaounde. I should not
pre-empt them.”
