Osun NUJ asks IG to halt brutality of journalists

By ‘Gbenga Faturoti,

Correspondent, Osogbo

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Osun State Council has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Tafa Balogun, to find a lasting solution to the incessant police brutality on citizens.

The union in a statement issued and signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Prince Ayoade Adedayo and Alhaji Hammed Bodunrin respectively particularly, condemned in totality the recent attacks on journalists in the state.

The council charged the inspector general of Police to as a matter of urgency put in place proper orientation for his men and officers in all commands and divisions to enhance the police public relations.

According to the statement, the executive council of the NUJ in the state expressed concern at the trend of attack of journalists in the state.

The council while reacting to the manhandling of Mr. Gbenga Faturoti of Daily Independent Newspaper, described it as uncivilised and barbaric in this era of democracy.

Though the police command was said to have apologised for the attack, the union wondered for how long would the police continue to harass journalists.

The state council of the NUJ urged the police authorities to impact into its officers, the civil ways of dealing with members of the public instead of constituting themselves into another factor of insecurity.

While recalling that only a couple of weeks ago the press centre of the union was sealed off by armed policemen numbering about 200 on June 9 and journalists harassed “with similar outright beatings and manhandling of members of the press.”
